Welcome to Uzès, France!

Uzès is a lovely market town in the Gard department of France with its roots in ancient Roman and Medieval history. It is situated in a hilly region leading up to the Cévennes Mountains, right at the source of the River Alzon, known as the Fontaine d'Eure. From this spring, a great Roman aqueduct was built to supply the industrial town of Nimes, 25 kilometers to the southwest, with fresh water.

Uzès also has a very unique Medieval history that continues to this day. It is the only commune in France that maintains and recognizes a Duke. The line of the current Duke of Uzès, Jacques de Crussol d’Uzès extends back to the 16th century and then even further back to the 14th century under the title of Viscount of Uzès.

Today Uzès is beloved as an authentic French town, set in bucolic surroundings, attractive to locals, tourists and expats alike. Surrounded by a busy peripherique its bustling medieval core is a maze of picturesque cobblestone walkways, or piétons.

Uzès hosts an energetic Saturday market and smaller Wednesday vegetable market. It is also well known for various arts and crafts such as pottery and textile production. For those with a sweet tooth Uzès has something special to offer as a center for the production of licorice! Today the candy giant Haribo maintains a factory and museum in town.
